Commissions

If you are envisioning a painting to fit a specific room, with a particular color palette, to commemorate a memory or place, or as a gift for yourself or a loved one, I would love to work with you to create your custom painting. Please read the below FAQ to understand the commission process. To begin the process, please send me an email with the size of the painting you’d like, and any relevant photo references.

FAQs

What can I commission?

You can commission a landscape, or a portrait of a loved one, pet, or home. I am open to discussion of your idea and would love to hear what you’re envisioning.

Can I commission a copy of a painting that already sold?

Each painting I make is unique. I can’t make an exact copy of any painting I’ve already made. You can, though, commission a painting with a similar color palette, feeling, or subject matter to a painting I’ve already created.

How long does a commission take?

When you reach out to schedule a commission, please mention if there is a particular deadline necessary for your project. Before we move forward we will agree on a project timeline.

What is the commission process?

First we will discuss your painting vision including the size, color, and subject matter. I like to schedule a time to talk on the phone, by video, or at my studio, so I can be sure I understand what you’re envisioning. Next I’ll make up a contract with all your commission details including timeline.

As a first step, I will create two sketched options for the painting composition, which you can either approve or request changes to. When we’re ready to move forward, I’ll create the painting based on the composition sketch and our discussion. When the painting is complete, you have the option to pick it up at my studio in Washington DC or have it shipped.

How much does a commission cost?

Commissions are priced to reflect the time, care, and effort required to create a custom painting. Because each piece is created custom to your vision, commission prices are higher than for my available work. I take care and time to ensure you are happy with your final painting.

Below are sample commission prices, by size. I can also create larger work and custom sizes. More complicated work or portraits with multiple subjects may require a slightly higher cost. Shipping is an additional cost. For detailed pricing for your project, email me at hilaryschenker.art@gmail.com.

  • 8” x 10” $325

  • 9” x 12” $400

  • 11” x 14” $445

  • 12” x 16” $475

  • 16” x 20” $750

  • 18” x 24” $980

  • 24” x 30” $1,600

  • 30” x 40” $2,700

  • 36” x 36” $2,800

Half of the commission cost is due on contract signing, and the remainder is due on completion (before shipping, if you are having it shipped; at pick up if you are picking up from my studio).

Do you frame commissions?

I usually work with oil paint on canvas that is 1.5” deep. I paint the edges white and it looks beautiful unframed. If you would prefer your painting framed, I can offer options of frames, and can frame the work for a framing fee of $40 plus the cost of the frame.

How do I submit a commission request?

Send me an email through the contact tab, or at hilaryschenker.art@gmail.com including the size of the painting you’d like and any relevant photo references.
